Fantasy and Science Fiction
I am Alex H. Levin. I am a physicist, and I write fantasy and science fiction. My magic has rules. My spaceflight has consequences. And my characters pay for both.

Dark Fantasy · A Lorrkai novel
Reika senses magic with every sense she has. She tastes a binding spell, hears the hum of a portal, feels foreign power on her skin — a rare gift among the apprentices of the mage fortress Kjasz. What she cannot do is steer it. She is an instrument with perfect pitch and no fretboard.
Then she wakes in a slum of the royal city Lyandra with no memory of how she got there. And the Soul Dagger is gone from the fortress — a relic that tears magic and souls out of living bodies. The archmages are fighting for the title of Grandmaster, and every one of them has a reason to want it.

Science-Fantasy · Space Opera · written in English
A hyperspace mage from the wrong century, an academy on the Moon, and a kind of magic nobody is allowed to use anymore. Peter „the Grey“ has to learn to cast by foreign rules — and hide that he still commands the old ones.
The name
The quintile is an angle of 72 degrees — one fifth of the circle. Johannes Kepler, astronomer and mathematician, described this aspect and tied it to creative force. In my birth chart, Sun and Moon stand in biquintile.
I am a physicist. I do not read this as a prophecy but as an image: the point where exact science and imagination ask the same question — what if the rules were different? Kepler measured the sky and never stopped marvelling at it. That is exactly where I write.
The worlds
Every world gets its laws before the first character takes a step. After that they hold — even when they stand in the story's way. Especially then.
The royal city Lyandra, the mage fortress Kjasz, portals to the mirror world Naan. Sserdou and Grathoi share this world with humans — not always peacefully.
A city under a magic dome on the Moon, in the 22nd century. Humanity has joined the trade network of the Tahuyan Empire. The price was its own magic.
Pentagon, 72 degrees, star charts. The geometry that fascinated Kepler runs through my worlds as an ordering principle — in runes, portals and navigation schemes.
